Funding Guidelines

The Henry Mayo Newhall Foundation, established in 1963, is a private foundation incorporated under California law.

The Foundation accepts grant proposals on a continuing basis from tax-exempt charitable institutions as defined under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

The Foundation restricts its gift-giving to geographical areas in California associated with the life and legacy of Henry Mayo Newhall. This includes the San Francisco area, the Santa Clarita Valley/Valencia area of Los Angeles County, and Santa Maria in central California.

The Foundation considers proposals from the following types of non-profit organizations: (1) outreach programs for the disadvantaged (e.g., homeless shelters, food banks, health centers, domestic violence shelters, care for the elderly); (2) cultural enrichment programs (e.g., college scholarship funds, music programs for youth, arts and science educational projects); and (3) agricultural programs.

Annual grants made by the Foundation typically range from $2,000 to $20,000, although donations of up to $100,000 have been made on rare occasions for special worthy projects.

The Foundation prefers to award matching or challenge grants, and to leverage its support with funding from other sources.

The Foundation will consider requests for multi-year funding for up to five years to facilitate effective program planning by supported institutions.
